Hello Team 31,
My name is Rachel Robinson and I am excited to be your faculty mentor this fall. I'm a professor in the Comparative and Regional Studies division of SIS, and my work is on population and health issues in sub-Saharan Africa. Luckily my research provides many opportunities for exciting travel! The class you're most likely to be able to take from me is SIS 206 - research methods in international relations - but I may teach other courses in my specialty areas in the future. I just started at AU last fall - before that, I lived in Berkeley, California.
I'm set to meet you all in two weeks, on Oct. 8. We have some money to spend, so I'm soliciting ideas for how we should spend it. I thought in particular it would be fun to get off campus. If you have ideas, please let Laura or me (robinson@american.edu) know.

Film Option
Hi Everyone,
Thanks again for coming to break-out session today. I hope you all got to enjoy the nice weather!
For those of you who are interested in film and are looking for an alternative to presentations, Bethesda Row Cinema and E Street Cinema are great theatres and only a few metro stop away. They both feature independent and foreign languages films; "Flow" and "Battle in Seattle" start Friday at E Street. If you see either and relate it to what we're covered in Gateway, I would be happy to sign your passport! We can make this a group activity, too.

Today @ AU: Highlights
Interested in volunteering?
Fall into Service. Get involved with the D.C. community and beyond. This semester you can volunteer to tutor children with D.C. Reads, participate in community-based learning and research with a local nonprofit for academic credit (CSLP), apply for an Eagle Endowment grant, or travel on a human rights alternative winter break trip. All of the Community Service Center programs are open to graduate and undergraduate students with a desire to work on a variety of social justice initiatives. Stop by our office in Mary Graydon Center 273, call us at 885-SERV (x7378), or visit our Web site: www.american.edu/volunteer.
Alternative Break: Guatemala
Alternative Break Guatemala: Human Rights and Fair Trade. This trip will explore several human rights issues currently facing Guatemala, including violence against women, indigenous rights, clandestine and gang-related violence, impunity in the Guatemalan legal system, and attacks against human rights defenders. The second part of this trip will focus on fair trade as a positive trend for human rights in Guatemala. We will learn about this movement firsthand by working on a fair trade and organic-certified coffee cooperative. To find out more, join us at one of our info sessions:

Welcome to our blog!
Once everyone has signed in, I will change the security settings to make it open to our group and Prof. Robinson only.
